Hi. The dimensions of my dining room is 12'X15.'
Can I put a dining room table that is 84"X42" and extends to 120" with leaves?
As well as put a sideboard that is 21" deep? (76"X21").
Or should I stick to the dining room table size of 72"X36." (Extends to 102").
Do yourself a favor, don't put a dining room table in there. Nobody uses a formal dining room except maybe twice a year. Turn it into your computer room, a hobby room, a kids homework room, a Wii room, anything except a dining room. Same for a formal living room.

My last house had a dining room and I used it for almost every meal. No tv, no distractions just dinner and conversation. So I guess it depends on the person. I personally do not like to see a dining room turned into an open mess which is usually what happens. My neighbors have a formal dining room and they dont use it. They turned it into a kid's playroom. It is open to the living room and all you see is a mess.
To the OP, my suggestion is get some painters tape and measure out how big the table is, then tape off the area you would put the table. It helps visually vs sketching it out on graph paper. Then add 3 feet around the table for chair placement and room to push the chairs out. Then add another 3-4 feet to walk around the table.

Or -- tape together newspaper in the size of the table and chairs -- that you maneuver and try other configurations....

This is a GREAT idea. Even using a tape measure will simply not give you the true idea of how big the table will be. Our dining room is probably 14x15 which seemed sort of huge when I had my dinky old 4 chair round table in there, then when we got our new table (can't remember the size, but could be 84x48) my wife was insistent on putting one of the leafs in....man, it totally took over the room. We rarely have more than 6 people eating at our house, so with just the basic table it looks perfect. We can add one leaf and it is tight, but still doable. Two leafs and we would have to angle the table diagonally in the room. We have a matching buffet and it is totally fine in the room with the table.

I love the idea of making a pattern for the size of the table out of newspapers. Make sure you have a rug that is big enough that the dining room chairs can be pulled out and still be on the rug.
We have a large dining room with a huge dining room table and we use it all the time. For parties (which we have often), it is a life saver. I am involved with a non-profit organization and have committee meetings and other meetings several times a month - it is wonderful to fit everone around the big table and have meetings.
My grandchildren love the dining room - our big table is great for puzzles, coloring, building blocks, etc.
When we do our taxes, are sorting out pictures, need a place to spread things out - the dining room table is terrific.
For holidays and special dinners, having a dining room is wonderful!
We also use our formal living room...we use all our rooms!

I've never lived in a house that had a "family room" or an eat in kitchen/breakfast bar so the living rooms and dining rooms have always been the public spaces where we spend time every day, watching TV, reading, eating meals or hanging out with friends.
