The neighbor didn't mention to me how much the bill was for, but I can't imagine it was a ton of money.
Doesn't matter. She has to go after the sprinkler installers who laid it wrong across the property. The fence company is not liable since they are on your side of the property line.

That's a good point, where was the fence installed? Right on the property line or 2 feet back. Usually you have to get the neighbor permission to place a fence right on the property line if not, usually you have to have the fence 2 feet in on your property. This allows you to do maintenance on your fence without going into the neighbors yard.

Not the fencing companies fault but the person who installed part of the sprinkler system on your property. If it has beeen your then you would have needed to inform them of the system ;so they would know.

This must be a regional thing. Here, fences are most often right on the property line.

The same logic then falls for people who place the pop-up heads of the sprinkler system on the property line. There's a setback rule for utility lines including water. Thus its a wash.

Same here, if you move your fence inside your ppty line you could lose that property to your neighbor by adverse possession quite easily.

My suggestion.....split the cost of the sprinkler line repair with your neighbor and be done with it....The sprinkler crew and fence crew will move on...you still have to live there next to one another and you don't want it to be awkward.... Life is way too short to let it escalate, put it to rest.... that's my $0.02

Believe me, I've considered offering to do this, but am concerned it might open myself up to further liability if there are other issues that come up (not that I expect any).

I haven't seen the neighbors in the past couple days (they travel fairly frequently) so I'm not sure what's up at this point. The string is still lying across the property line, though. Not sure what's up with that.

I'd just ask the neighbor.... assuming they know that this is a strange, PIA situation which is really neither yours or their fault. "What can we do to make this right between us?"

I think at this point, if they aren't bringing it up to you and are still being nice they have decided to just eat the cost (probably can afford it if they travel a lot) or are going after the fence company or original sprinkler company... who knows.

Tell the neighbor to pound sand.
Up to this point the neighbor had neither asked for, or threatened anything.

Why encourage someone to behave in a manner that will create hostility, when so far there is none.
