Just save my 99 year old neighbor's Amana Refrigerator.

The fan went out... she called a repairman and learned it was too old and parts were no longer available...

He said he might be able to adapt something if she was willing to spend $250.

I pulled the old fan out and picked up a universal replacement for $17...

It's been 5 days working again and she thinks I walk on water

Yeah, he was going to "adapt" all right.

Some other site said my fan motor might cost $35. Nope it would have been $110.00.

It seems my coils are not getting coolant, much past the very top right of the coils.

Someone said there could have been a top side leak. Repairable?
Someone said the compressor could be burned up. Or it might be working fine if the coils are hot.

The fan has been working now for 2-3 hours and it is not cooling down.

I don't have an ohm meter, etc. to test the compressor.
Adding refrigerant is another unknown.

It does not look good right now on a home repair.

Replacing - repairing the fan motor was a home repair. Fortunately the blade had slipped down the shaft and the blade was rubbing the two screws. So, saved $110.00 so far.

The best way to really tell is throw on some access valves and see your pressures.

That sums it all up in a second.

i have been out of the refrigeration field for 37 years as a mechanic as my forte had morphed into being a motor control specialist.

one of the reasons i entered the refrgeration/ac field is because when i was thinking about a career as a teenager decades ago i realized folks will rebuild an entire car engine or renovate an entire house but when it came to the sealed systems of refrigeration and ac no one ventured in. it was almost like a black art back then.

so that was the career path i took. eventually i learned to hate it as every where i went either i was on a hot roof, a machine room where it was 120 degrees or in a building with no a/c..

so i migrated more into the control ends end of things specializing in the economizer systems back in the day at the malls.

eventually i migrated to factory automation and motor controls became my forte.

so having said that ,im curious ,how many today not in the business have gone into the sealed systems on their own?

That is where I'm headed it seems. I'm waiting to hear from a repair man for an estimate.
This unit had been making abnormal sounds every 12 hours for long periods of time. I was always told by everyone it was the defrost cycles and the noise was normal. The bedroom doors had to be shut to decrease the noise.

I guess the unit was going bad then. The "defrost cycle is all it is" crowd may have been wrong.

This freezer is not quite dead yet. Over night there is increased frosted ice on the coils.
Maybe 3-5 inches more from left to right along the top.
The inside temperature is down to 25.
Based on what I'm reading, the destination temperature should be 0-5 degrees.

Because the coils inside are cool/cold, that means the compressor is working and there is refrigerant in the system. It sounds like the only problem is with the fan or the power to the fan.

You can test this by placing another fan in its place. Maybe a fan blowing on those outside coils (flow backwards) or whatever. This should cause the freezer inside temperature to drop further.

My error earlier. The temp. was down to 30 not 25.
The fan blades are tattered, broken on the edges from having the blade slowly slide down the shaft and rub the bracket screws at high speeds.
I've ordered a new fan blade for $4.50 and pick it up tomorrow.

Currently the fan is attatched backwards. The fan is facing the door when it should face the rear.
I just mounted it temporarily to re-attatch the wires to see if the motor was good.

The top of the coils continue to gather frosted ice.
I know the fan is mounted backwards.
When I get the new blade, I'll slide it on the shaft and hope it fits on solidly.
This whole works was behind a panel and it all happened without any warning. Unless the alarm went on middle of the night and timed out and cut off. Next day, thawed food caused water on floor.

So, the compressor seems fine and fan motor ok.
Once the fan blade is replaced and installed the proper direction it should cool down, as you say.

Thanks.

Sometimes the fan will slip enough to lessen air flow...

Behind the hidden panel, behind all the food, the blade slipped enough to cause the blade to rub the motor bracket screws. Eventually it bound off, and the fan would not turn at all.

The old and new blade both have round metal clips so the motor shaft fits tightly. However, in the photo the new blade has a cap on top so it can not slip down like the other did, and rub the bracket screws.

The freezer temp. went up to 40. I'll replace the blade and try again to see if it will cool down to 0-5.

I went ahead and bought a used one as a spare.
Brand in Danby. Never heard of that one.
