...I used some sure-fire, never-fail ant bait and the ants have cheerfully ignored it. They only seem to go after crumbs of meat, which tells me they are "grease ants," not "sugar ants." I couldn't find anything at the hardware that is supposed to kill anything but sugar ants. Does anyone know how to deal with these visitors? I have pets and would not like them all killed by whatever you suggest, please!

Easy fix. Try to find locally Bengal Bug spray. It's boric acid based. It works great and won't hurt anybody if you have kids in the house. I will caution you though, the can is under HIGH pressure so be prepared. A short shot is all that's required.

Every spring before the rains I sprinkle this around the foundation. Keeps them away all year.

Thanks for bringing that up...I looked everywhere possible...none in any stores here.
No where else to look.

Free delivery too. I have zero bugs in the house and I spray at doors every year. Maybe different with an old house but it keeps killing a long time. Use it only in areas where they can get in and where you find them. No need to spray the entire house. Like I said previously, a lot comes out when you hit the spray.

I've battled ants for years - they always came back...

Until someone new bought the house next door and also started killing the ants there. Now the ants are gone!

(Get all your neighbors to kill ants at the same time.)

On the Bengal product - being pedantic, it is primarily Permethrin in it that does a fast kill and causes scurrying, not borates. Hotcatz has the right idea in post #3, with the caveat that it only takes a miniscule amount of boric acid dust to do the job properly and get the queen.

As said above, very effective. Here is a website explaining it. Sawyer® Duranon Permethrin Insect Repellent : Cabela's
