just got a Mini Fridge from home depot its a Magic Chef 3.5 cu. ft. It turns on and turns off every 5 min. I have it at 4 for a cooling setting. I put it at 5 setting and it did the some thing on and off every 5 min. I put it at 7 just to see if it would change anything it ran for over 6 hours until I put it back 4. is this normal or anything to worry about? Every mini fridge I had would turn on for about 45 min or so and turn off for an hour or so. I called home depot and a worker told me it may just have a sensitive thermostat. I have 30 days to return it. Any advice?

Is the fridge empty? An empty fridge isnt going to run correctly because its just air inside. It needs something to cool like liquids

How long did it sit in its upright position BEFORE you started it?

Lightbulb even a fridge needs some thermal mass to stabilize the temperature.

Good point. While more important for a freezer, even a fridge needs some thermal mass to stabilize the temperature. Consider it an excuse to always have at least a six pack in the chill chest at all times.

Look in the back of the fridge for the skinny thermostat probe (capillary tube), usually it extends from the thermostat control towards the freezer section, and is held in place next to the condenser coil with a little plastic or aluminum clip. If it's hanging loose in the air instead of in the clips, it will cycle more quickly.

Dosent really matter these days.
Almost all residential refrigerators have no excess refrigerant in them and all the refrigerant is in a vapor state in the tubing.
If I recall those fridges have a mere 3 oz of freon in them. It takes a long time for them to begin cooling and you really should throw a gallon of water in them and let it run overnight before you use it.,

It had nothing to do with the refrigerant, or how much. It has everything to do with the oil and the compressor working efficiently with proper lubricant. But since there was no response from the OP, there was no need for explanation. But, then along came a spider with convoluted information that discounted my inquiry without the knowledge of intent.

The owners book only said 4 hours, but I let it go for 5 before plugging it in.

Good! You'd be surprised how many people don't do that- or understand why.
