Personally I would rather use a good quality paper hand towel that hasn't been used by others than a cloth towel. I once dated a guy who never, ever washed the hand towel in his guest bathroom except a few times a year.
And I also have a bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter.
In my bathroom, I know I washed my hands.
Ugh....how many times have you gone to a party and taken a crap at their place? You must be one of those "if I don't crap 3 times a day I don't know if I'm healthy" types?
If I were having a big party, I'd consider paper, but otherwise, I'd just monitor the cloth guest towels and keep replacing them.
My friend has two baskets in her guest room. In one there are rolled up white washcloths. There is an identical basket on the back of toilet to receive the used ones. Everybody gets a fresh one.
If you throw a big party every once in a while, I think those pretty paper guest towels are fine. If you're like some friends of ours and it's a monthly event...the baskets with with cloth towels are better. Either way, a cute little sign denoting your preference would be nice.
If you have a LOT of guests, then the costs would add up. I see nothing wrong with having cloth hand towels available for guests. Just make sure there are more than one available or change them once or twice/daily, or MORE if you are having a large dinner party, etc.
How about a bowl of individually packaged moistened towelettes?
I've put a paper towel roll in the bathroom when I'm expecting guests.
I'm happy people wash their hands; surprised this is such an issue.
OP I understand you have limited space but since it's that important to you install a paper towel holder where guests can easily see it, and put a nice flowery italicized note "Please do not flush" underneath, near a wastebasket.
Keep in mind some people are gross and don't wash their hands. And some dry their hands with toilet paper.
Personally, I think paper towels are somewhat tacky. I would (and do) go with nice decorative hand towels.
Ditto. I think paper towels in a guest bath are tacky. The towels don't have to be fancy, but a couple of real hand towels that aren't all ratty tells guests that they are worth a real towel.
actually, I don't think a roll of paper towels is tacky at all, (especially when you are having a house full of company) besides, who would care?, and who should care?, it is so not important in life.
I'd prefer to use a paper towel in someone else's home and throw it in the waste basket. done, dry, leave bathroom. I don't see a big deal, why?, because it isn't. If they don't have paper towels, I use the behind the door towel.
I would not however use anyone show towels on the wall, because I have the same, and know better.
Although I had a friend years ago use my strategically folded and placed show towels and I went in the bathroom afterwards and said why did you use the show towels, and mess them all up!, when I have 2 big bath towels behind the door? Couldn't you clearly see these are not supposed to be used?
His answer was: "oh stop it, they are supposed to be used"
So my reply was, "well not in this house", "not in mothers house", "not in my grandmothers house", "not in my sister house", "not in any of my aunts house", My sons even know not to use show towels......
Nowadays I don't have many guests to worry about this, I always have 2 bath towels and a hand towel behind the door, plus I always have a stack of about 5 hand towels and 5 wash rags stacked on the corner of the tub....
and while were at it, how about the people that turn the water on full force and water is splattered all over????????????????????
IDK, If I went to any of your homes out here in CD land, I would turn the water on slow, and wash quickly......dry and come out, not flood your bathroom......pet peeve.

Of course you don't have many guests. Who wants to take a chance on using the wrong towel?
Lovingly place a stack of your old underdrawers on the sink for use as towels. (Wash them first, and PLEASE do not paint brown streaks on them...) Just make sure that the cat isn't in the bathroom with your guest, or it may emerge with wet fur and a sour disgusted look on its puss.
Personally, I like a solid light color cloth towel with NO fabric softener. I can then see it is more or less clean, it will actually absorb water, and oxygen bleach will keep it nice.
