I see ads for very expensive sheets. I cant imagine why anyone would spends hundreds on a set of sheets. What am I missing? What's the difference how they feel if I'm sleeping?

They only work if you tell your friends how much you paid for them.

Define expensive? Depending on your comfort level you can get some great soft sheets for less than $100 but more than $50 depending on size and brand. I’ve learned to look for 100% cotton and between 300 to 400 thread count. A cotton/polyester blend cheap sheets don’t breath as well nor anywhere near as soft. They’re fine for a guest bed or fold out cot/bed.

I think our fleece sheet set from Costco are about the softest most cushiest sheets I can imagine, and I think they were less than a hundred bucks.

We have sheets from Restoration Hardware and Brooklinen.
Both are way above average in comfort and longevity.

Somebody is making a lot of profit on bedsheets. 30 years ago you could buy percale cotton for 30 bucks a set at the “dime” store. Today it’s hard to find pure cotton especially in the percale weave and they are over 100 a set closer to 200. What has changed? Marketing which convinced people they wanted sateen weave and synthetics. And a high profit motive that took the older cheaper sheets and made them scarce and precious. IMHO

For those who don’t know percale weave is the same number of threads per inch going up and down versus left to right. Sateen has 4:1 approximately so in one direction there are/is much fewer threads which makes it feel “softer”.

The best sheets are 100% cotton percale, in white ("light colors may feel softer as some dark dyes can add to sheet stiffness"), with a 180-300 thread count. They age beautifully. However, if you hate wrinkles and prefer sheets that are soft right out of the package, they might not be for you.

They cost from $40-$80 for a full or queen set.

Excellent data on percale sheets:

Here is a "review" article from the Wirecutter, on the "best cotton sheets": https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cotton-sheets/

Of course, we need not endorse their rankings, since we may prefer a lower rated set here, or sets not even mentioned in thius article.
