We might need a brown color(on the outside) vinyl sliding door. They stock the all-white variety for $400 but if you want it in brown, it is special order and costs $1000. And 4 weeks. So, why not just paint it? I have a feeling paint is not going to sit well on slippery vinyl.

Could be done, but it's not advisable. You are right, that paint does not adhere to vinyl well. Also painting the vinyl window frame may void your warranty, which means that you would be unable to get the manufacturer to fix your windows if there is a problem.

Your color choice is very important when painting vinyl windows and siding, especially if they're exposed to direct sunlight all day. Darker colors absorb intense heat from the sun, which can actually lead to warping and cracked glass. If you do decide to paint anyway Pro Industrial, Multi-Surface acrylic paint, as well as Duration, both sold by Sherwin Williams are safe for vinyl and don't require primer. Using premium paint is absolutely worth the extra cost for exterior painting, especially vinyl.
As recommended here:

You probably would need to hire a professional, so that, plus the expensive paint needs to be considered. Call the windows/doors producer and ask about the warranty.
You also need to be prepared to invest a lot of time and energy in maintenance from here on out? Painting vinyl window frames is very much like painting brick walls. Both may improve the appearance dramatically, but doing it once is a lifetime commitment to repainting every year or two. So consider your decision carefully.

What's wrong with white? They make windows appear clean and bright. Maybe there is a way to incorporate white windows with your house trim.

Get a colored storm door. I absolutely would not paint the windows, but would the door. I bought a few Anderson doors at HD, and the exterior was metallic fire wall type stuff sandwiching engineered wood. They were paintable. Parents painted the one on their brand new house a few years ago...didn't seem like vinyl, either. Seen PVC bathroom doors...

There is a special paint made for plastic, by both Krylon and Rustoleum. I have used them on a variety of plastics and for indoors, with no weather and minimal handling they work fine. I wouldn’t try it on the outside of a door or window, it just won’t hold up. You would be better off applying premium vinyl film to it, as is used for signs and vehicle wraps. After cleaning well with alcohol before applying, it should last 8 years.

Perhaps that doesn't work when the trim color is something other than white!

The real issue is the HOA. All doors and windows in the development are brown on the outside. I just can't see paying a $1000 for a $400 sliding door just to make it brown. For a second I thought may be getting a brown screen door would do.

You might want to check on Habitat for Humanity sort of places. I often see there windows and doors in other colors.
