Even Walmart has decent home fire extinguishers. Look for those labeled as ABC rated extinguisher. A refers to materials which burn and leave behind an ash. B refers to burning liquid fires (grease, oil, gas, etc). C refers to electric fires. These are the three most common types of home fires. The ones you get at hardware stores will be of better quality. Once you’ve made your purchase then it’s time to decide where to store it. It’s best to mount the extinguisher on the wall near the entrance to the kitchen, the most common room for home fires. If you store it in a cabinet then you risk forgetting it’s location or even that you have one when you need it most. Use a permanent marker to mark the date install. Five years later replace the extinguisher. Once replaced, use the old extinguisher to practice outside. Point at a spot and squeeze in short burst.

A household fire extinguisher is a great idea.
I have a 5lb one in the kitchen and a 10lb one in the garage.

About $60 each from Amazon.

Yes, a 5lb near and dedicated for the kitchen and a 10lb in the garage and basement or near your furnace/water heater area. Decent fire extinguishers can be recharged or checked on an annual basis and many local and volunteer fire departments will perform this function.

Most municipalities require the extinguishers to be recharged/verified one time each year following 1 year beyond the purchase date.

If you’ve never used one buy a cheap extra and build a small outdoor fire in a safe pit or similar and practice using it properly. There is usually only a few seconds worth of powder. Spray at the bottom of the flames in a back and forth motion.

I prefer the small burst method instead of the continuous spray and sweep back and forth method. Use enough to put it out and reserve the rest in case it reflashes again. I’ve seen a fire in which someone sprayed all their extinguisher, believed the fire was out, and the fire re-started again.

Oh, and when you buy the extinguisher fill out the registration. I did this with a previous extinguisher and a few years later received a recall notice. They sent me a new extinguisher to replace the one I already had.
