We decided to have someone come out to just replace the rotted boards.

I am not sure how much this will cost, but should be substantially less than $68k

I know it will be piece meal but it will be easier on my budget. I will replace with the hardiplank siding.
I didn’t get a chance to weigh in, but I think what you are doing is the right thing. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

I agree with the others, that vinyl/aluminum siding looks cheap, and well maintained wood should last for hundreds of years if you take care of the sources of the deterioration.

I have seen a painting ad called Rhino Shield. I don’t know anything about it, but they claim the coating/paint is long lasting.

Just an update, I found a more reasonable firm to remove the old siding and install hardiplank siding. The job quoted was substantially less than the previous firm's quote of 68k.

When they removed the siding around the chimney, my husband and I were aghast at the rotten support beams. It looked like termites had eaten through it. I am surprised the chimney had not collapsed.

Even my dh is happy with the new siding, even though it is not vinyl.
