Is it normal to get constant banging, snapping and cracking noises coming from ceiling and walls of a wood frame building, day and night? Every couple of hours we are being woken up by a loud snap or popping noise coming ceiling or walls, maybe the roof itself, it's hard to tell. Sometimes it constantly hits and doesn't go away. The noises are constant and reoccurring, all the time, not just when temperature outside is changing. There is no wind outside and the weather has been nice (80s during the day, 60s at night). It's hard to get a solid night of sleep. Some nights it hits every hour or couple of hours. Any ideas?
Do you have open vaulted ceilings? Are your doors/windows functioning properly or are they out of plumb?
We have open rafter vaulted ceilings and found the walls were spreading and had to correct the problem so it didn’t get worse. We had to essentially add turn buckles to the collar ties and pull the walls back in. They are now visible due to the open ceilings. I was pretty upset about it but it looks like part of the design and everyone comments on how cool it looks. I’m not as bothered by it as I thought I’d be. The noises are virtually gone.
Sounds like expansion and contraction noises from wood framing but usually from plywood flooring that was installed tightly when dry, especially if the finished floor is a 3/4 hardwood. It has much to do with the construction, weather conditions and moisture content of the materials when the house was being built.
The last house I’ve lived in was one built in the 60,s that I totally renovated and the existing flooring/sub flooring often made loud noises at night due to expansion and contraction. No easy way to remove that issue.
Hot water copper piping can also make a constant clicking sound when using the water if the copper piping straps were installed too tightly.
Seasonal expansion and contraction, especially now as temps swing toward cooler. The newer the house, the more you are going to hear the noise as beams and boards stick at first, and then "snap" as they release the tension. I hate to use this analogy, but think tectonic plates in the earth. They build tension, and then they snap/quake as they release. Same principle; different scale.
