I see in larger model homes that they stack 2 W/D's side by side.

In a "utility room."

Since the kitchen requires hot/cold water and sewer, it makes sense to have laundry in the same general area.

I have a single unit stacked washer/dryer unit in my kitchen, which is large and long. It was one of the accommodations suggested by the RE agent that enabled me to buy the house. The original laundry area was in the basement utility room where I also have a new Samsung washer and dryer to handle quilts and heavy bedding items. But the kitchen unit is great for everyday clothing and saves me a lot of stair trips.

My parents' washer and dryer are in the kitchen. It's a big kitchen, so not really out of place. That's how we've always done it, so it's not out of place to me.

Many apartments have the washer hookup in the kitchen - saves on plumbing runs.
Popular option in Federal Housing Projects, too.

I'd love to have my W/D in the kitchen.

Easier to switch loads while I'm cooking and cleaning the kitchen. As noted above, lots of counter space to sort and fold.

Assuming of course you keep those kitchen counters spotless!

My last condo had them in the kitchen. The kitchen was a very small galley kitchen, so it wasn’t like there was much room to fold or organize in there, but it was actually fairly convenient. If something messy happened in the kitchen or I had to bring stuff in from outside, the washer was right there to just throw stuff in as it was right near the entry. It was also too small to have a utility sink, so this was pretty much the best option available.

We lived in an apartment that had the washer/dryer hookups in a closet in the kitchen. When the machines weren't in use, we would close the closet doors. We never had an issue with that arrangement.

It was far better than our first apartment which had a group laundry room in the building. The machines only took quarters so we always needed to have quarters on hand if we wanted to get our laundry done. It was located on the ground floor so that meant lugging baskets of clothes/detergent/dry sheets through the building and up and down several flights of stairs which was a pain.

Before we remodeled our kitchen our washing machine was in there. We had a front loader and used the top of the machine for random stuff. If we had a party, we put a table cloth over it and used it as a serving table. The dryer was on the back porch. The washer is now on the back porch as well.
