Sure, in the mid-1950s built house where I grew up had our washer and dryer in the smaller end of our L-shaped kitchen, next to the back door of the kitchen. I think it was fairly common in Southern California at the time, and the size of the house doesn't seem to have been a factor. As best I can recall its size at the time, by guesstimating how much later owners have added on and subtracting that, it still comes out to about 2400 sqft. (It seems so much smaller in hindsight, but then there was a big room we used only when there was company.)

My laundry for the past 25 years or so has been just off the kitchen (2 different places) separated by a door.

Mid 60's living in an apt. Mom got a wringer type washer. It was in the kitchen in a corner. Filled and drained using kitchen sink. No dryer.

Late 70's I had my own apt. and got a wringer. Lived in a duplex, no room for it inside so it was outside around the corner almost out of sight. Filled it with water hose. This was in Fla.
Lol good old days.

My current house, which was built in 2007, has the washer and dryer in the kitchen. I actually really like it. They’re in a closet with a door, so they are not always in sight, but kind of nice to not have to go to the basement to take care of laundry.

It also reminds me of my grandparents house. It was old house and they had the washer and dryer in their kitchen, as it was the only place other than the (dirt floor) basement that had enough room for it.

Not a good combination of detergent, fabric softeners vs. curry, garlic, and onion and foods fighting to be the No. 1 scent in your clothes.

A washer and dryer by your bathroom makes more sense. Take off dirty clothes. Take shower. Throw those sweaty or dirty clothes in the basket and then walk a few steps to the laundry room.
Bringing anything dirty into the kitchen is not very sanitary.
Imagine if your kid has some clothes with vomit, dog crap or cat hair that need to be thrown in the washer a couple steps away from the soup, lasagna or omelete. Okay, or if an adult comes in the kitchen like that too.

My house was built in the 70s and they are in the kitchen. Not "IN" the kitchen, but in a cubby "in the kitchen" and they are in there now. I have to stack them, and its extremely difficult to move them, or replace them without having to take the back door off. Without a major remodel, or addition, theres nowhere else I could put them.

I lived in a two bedroom apartment (converted house into 4 units). We had a full size washer and dryer in the kitchen. The kitchen was actually the largest room in the apartment. Even with the washer/dryer, there was still room for a full sized table and a china cabinet.
