tell me about sheets. bed sheets.
I got so confused looking in the store.
Thread count and such - what is good, what to avoid?
I want in the middle as far as quality - not the best nor the worst. I'm sure organic cotton is best, but I don't want to spend $50.00 for a sheet (twin). Plus I just need the fitted sheet, but apparently I have to buy a set?

thanks..
From what I understand the higher the thread count, the nicer the sheet. But there are now many different types of fabric used for sheets (that shiny stuff/sateen, microfiber, jersey, and flannel, which I use in winter).
I'd go to a place that sells sheets and feel them..you should get an idea fairly quickly what you'd like and prefer. I prefer cotton.
For single sheets, I use LL Bean (for the flannels - you can get single Twin XL because we have a split king that adjusts up and down). And yes, they are expensive.

I do not like to sleep hot, so I do not enjoy high thread count sheets. They do not breathe as well as lower count sheets. My go-to is 100% cotton sheets from Target, I think their brand is Threshold and the thread count is like 400. They feel nice and aren't hot. You will probably have to buy both top and bottom sheets from most places.

We go middle of the road as well. When my husband's dad was dying and living with us, I got him some of the 600ct Egyptian just because...to me, they're near to the best in my price range.
I normally order my husband's sheets online and he needed one fitted sheet last weekend (for whatever reason I never noticed he only uses one set since his dad died). I just bought the fitted sheet at Walmart. The one I got was microfiber, about $16, and he's fine with it.
I normally order 300ct cotton for him. I order 300ct cooling/wicking sheets for myself.
What I consider "the worst" are 100ct cotton sheets. They feel scratchy and rough.
Sheets in 200ct are better, and actually decent if you are hot-natured and need to "breathe" at night. The higher the count, the tighter the weave, which is why they become smoother.
The Cotton vs Egyptian is the softness of the thread.
Percale vs Sateen is the type of weave.
Microfiber is a tight weave made of synthetics like nylon and/or polyester, and lasts longer than cotton, but stores heat.

We recently bough a set of them made from bamboo, and they are by far the most comfortable sheets we have ever slept on.
It doesn't sound likely, in fact I was skeptical when my wife suggested it, but she had heard about it from her friend, and it was true.
They are really silky soft.

Another vote for Threshold bought at Target.
I bought 400 thread sheets at Target on sale. Very reasonably priced.
They wash great and never need ironing if you fold them whilst still warm from the dryer. I live in Florida and find the sheets are cool for sleeping.
