I have two story white house with hunter green shutters. Do I try and match the shutters or try and match the white and the green with a different color?

We once owned a house that was off-white with hunter green shutters. It had a dark charcoal colored roof. It looked nice. We noticed that you could see more gunk (black streaks, dirt, etc.) with the lighter colored roofs some of our neighbors had.

Good point. Some people have said a darker roof will cause the house to be warmer, but I think they would be beneficial in the winter.

i'd have to agree... charcoal colored.. a good neutral. not everyone would keep the hunter green... it is much harder to get rid of a green roof.

I think a color like weatherwood might work well. (Grayish-greenish-brown, pretty much a gray with some texture.)

I think a green roof is attractive when it has specialty shingles that have a 20s look or pattern about them -look either like a diamond pattern or a little like suare tiles. But the green does not tend to look good against white when it is a standard or even the typical architectural shingle look.

I would go with a greyish color. the weathered wood color is more brownish. that is the shingle color we have. You can go to a home improvement store and bring a sample home to check out.

Personally I dont like a light colored roof on a tall house. A darker roof grounds it more IMO. Not sure of the style of your house but certain shingle types and colors go with certain styles. If you have a two story colonial then charcoal would be my vote. It looks more period IMO. .

If youre doing regular shingles the dimensional ones look more interesting than regular shingles.. If you want to spend a little more check out the fake slate shingles. They give the illusion of slate but theyre still shingles.

The nice thing about a neutral roof is youre not locked into just one color scheme. Down the road when you feel like a change all you have to do is repaint the shutters and the front door and voila new house. Also when you go to sell there may be a remote possibility that your buyer may hate green. Altho I dont see how that could be possible. Green is my very most favorite color.

Drive around and look at other two story white houses. See what you like and dislike about their roofs. Ask potential roofing companies to give you actual houses to look at so you can see examples of their work. Preferably white houses with charcoal roofs.

Look at the dark green Shangle from Certainteed. They look very nice and have a lifetime warranty (whatever that means). Very pricey though.

Also with green shutters ;you might look at slate grey for a roof. Salte greys go good with green shutters because thyey look like weather slate which has a greenish tint.
