I need some help from maybe an architect or builder. I am adding some cabinets to my kitchen which will close up the entry way. Currently I have a pretty large 4'10" opening from the living room/hall into my kitchen. (too big in my opinion because it does not define the entrance to the kitchen). If I proceed with my plans to add a row of cabinets (on a completely unused/wasted wall) the opening will decrease to 42". Is that too small? It seems small but it may just feel small in comparison to the existing opening. Is there a rule of thumb on kitchen entries? I don't know if you need more info. The room is 19x20 so I don't really want a narrow entry into a fairly large room. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
At 42" you're fine.
The "rule of thumb" if there really is one would be no opening smaller than a 2/8 (32"). That allows enough of an opening for getting appliances in and out.
