Any suggestions on the best place to buy some nice drapes for a very large living room window? We got a lot of sun through that window so I'm looking for heavy drapes that will block light out, but still look nice. Any ideas? We usually look at JC Penney, but haven't had great success in the past.

Have you tried the home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes? Target has good window treatments from time to time. I've also bought shades for my sliding glass doors at Pier One.

Your other alternative is to make them yourself or have them custom made. Can you sew? If so, select the fabric of your choice and line it with sunblock fabric. That's what the pros do.

Well, I was going to say Penny's, but I see you tried that. What about Sears? Do you have Bed, Bath and Beyond store there? We bought liners to use on our curtains upstairs. Do you have solar screens? They're great for helping with the heat.

Smith + Nobel, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Curtain Exchange, and Silk Trading Company all have good curtains. I've also had good luck at TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Lines & Things.

First I'm going to say don't need big heavy drapes to cut down on the amount of sun coming in. Even after putting up some heavy drapes if you spend a lot of money on these your not going to want them to fade from the sun and look old really fast. So find a local 3M dealer that does the residential window tinting. THIS STUFF IS AWESOME!!! I'm in the Dallas area and we have a lot of sun and the heat in the summer and the tinting protects my floors, furniture and window treatments as well as lowers the temp in the summer. Most of the custom builders here do this now on their homes. Once you get this done then you can find a window treatment that is more to your liking that does not have to be closed all the time for privacy or to keep too much sun from coming in. We have the tint on all of our windows including all the french doors across the front of the house. We have beautiful french doors w/ leaded glass arches above them and I did not want to cover them up so we had the glass on the doors tinted. I can still see out, get sunshine in, privacy and protect my furnishings.

Hoosier, try Bed, Bath and Beyond. If you get on their mailing list they will send you a 20% off coupon which even though it has an expiration date, they will honour past that date.

They have a nice selection of both sheers and regular curtains. I can't stand to have bright light glaring into the house.
