Do "fake" owls really keep them away? Any other suggestions?

You might have ants or termites. They don't usually peck for no reason.

We have woodpeckers every spring... they see homes as just another thing in the environment and will peck sometimes to just make noise (I have actually seen them appear to comunicate that way).

Normally they do not cause any damage here, just irritation and they are gone as summer starts.

Exactly! Woodpeckers peck for bugs! Could be termites or any other insect infestation!

The very first course of action would be to call an exterminator to evaluate the house.

You might have termites/ants/etc., then again you might not. It wouldn't hurt to look into it, just in case. In our case the woodpeckers come every year and peck a time or two, but we don't have insects.

The pecking is also a breeding behavior to attract mates. We have one that hits the aluminum gutter right outside Psychodaughter's room at about 7:15 every morning from the middle of April on. He then flies two houses up the street and hits the old TV antenna pole. Nice ringing sound to that.

It also gets the porch rake on the house next door. Looking for spiders, believe it or not. This has been going on for the 23 years we've been in this house.

That made me laugh...love to hear it. That clacking on aluminum gives the best clanking for distance and 'callin' up the wimmins.' I agree w/ North Beach...give it a couple of weeks and the woodpecker (male) should be gone. Like the song..."You'll swear you've heard it before As it slowly rambles on and on..." I'll agree that it's a(n old fashioned) love song, not a food fest.

I know what I've done with woodpeckers in the past and it works, permanently.

But, if I say what it is, it'll upset the PETA folks.

We have them peck in the spring also. They drill holes in the house and then have babies in the walls!
