I have been to Houston about 6 times in the past few months. Unfortunately, most of my experience has been in the Katy area, which I love.

Our family is in the same boat...we are trying to narrow it down to Katy, Kingwood, The Woodlands, or Sugar Land. You have the advantage of having been there, though. My Spouse will be working Downtown and we want a nice family friendly suburb just outside of the loop. You are in good company! I wish you all the best!

If you love Katy, why not move there? People who live there really seem to like it.
Sugar Land is another good choice, as are some parts of Pearland. You can look at school rankings at
GreatSchools.net and another variable to consider is whether you want an older neighborhood with mature trees vs. a newer neighborhood that hasn't yet become lush and green.

well...most of our friends currently live in Katy, however they all are talking about moving to Pearland in a year. So, I don't really want to buy in Katy and then move to Pearland in a year. Does Pearland have more of the older trees, as I know Katy is still relatively new.

I would personally chose Katy over Pearland if I had to live in an Exburb. Strange your friends would move from one extreme to another.

I wouldn't consider Pearland an exurb. Many of the houses are only minutes outside Beltway 8. The commute is much shorter than from Katy. Some of the neighborhoods have fully mature trees.
I think Pearland is quite nice; if I were to move to a suburb, that is the only one I would consider. But then, we work in the universities/med center area, so it makes the most geographical sense for us. People have different reasons for preferring different areas.

Just a bit of trivia here. The tree question has less to do with Katy being new than it does with the terrain. Houston is on the edge of a region of terrain change. To the south, west (Katy) and SW is coastal prairie. To the N and NE is piney woods. Just something to keep in mind.

If you're going to be working downtown a lot, I, personally, would try to pick a spot near a park and ride, if you're interested in public transport.
