I am a young professional relocating to the greater Houston area from Chicago suburbs. I will be working in The Woodlands (about 45 min north on I-45 of Houston). I recently took a business trip down there and I thoroughly enjoyed the area and it is very aesthetically pleasing.

I wanted to see what were the best areas to live in throughout the Houston-area. Things that I enjoy are: movies, sports, outside activities (biking/running/etc), swimming and great locations to different resturants and bars. I have noticed that the Pavilion area in The Woodlands has a lot of these accommodations but I am hesitant to relocate there because I do not believe a lot of young professionals live in that area, which is important to myself.

Other areas that I have looked at are the Heights and mid-town but I am terrified of the commute from Houston to the Woodlands. any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The Heights or Midtown would be your best bet. It would be a reverse commute so it will not be as bad as going the other way.

The commute is not for everyone. It is long and when there's an accident, it can be brutal but there is also the toll road which is an AWESOME alternative to have.

In the mornings, I can get to work in 30 minutes, give or take. The afternoons are a bit longer, usually 45-50mins on I-45 or 35 mins on Hardy Toll Road.

When I moved here 2 years ago as a young professional I found TW to be pretty but not somewhere I wanted to live. I'm a "city girl" and have never lived in the suburbs anywhere I've lived.

I used to do reverse commute in a different city as a young professional and I used my 30-40 minutes to talk on the phone (not a popular proposition these days) and/or get an audio book, catch up with news on local radio station. Once I got to work or home, I felt informed of local happenings that otherwise I wouldn't have known and ready to go on with the day.

It got tricky when I had a doctor's appointment or we had bad weather, accidents. Thankfully many of those days I was able to work from home and save the drive in the middle of the day.

If you prefer city life and I would recommend you first move somewhere around Mid-town or the Heights - easy access to interstate for your work. Also good neighborhood for young adult to walk/bike places.

If you are an average young Chicagoan, Montrose, Washington Ave corridor and Midtown are going to be your best bets. Living in the Woodlands is more like living in Naperville.

1. Move to Montrose, Rice-Military, Washington Ave., Midtown.

2. Deal with 30 minute reverse-commute (the Hardy Toll Road is your friend).

3. Run, play, hang out at bars, restaurants, coffee shops.

4. Meet potential future partner.

5. Partner up and move to The Woodlands.

Problem solved.

Thank you all for the help and the suggestions. It seems like doing a reverse commute my not be that bad. I currently commute from one suburb to another suburb in the Chicago-land area and it takes me about 45 minutes on a good day. So it seems like the commute in the greater Houston area would be comparable, if not better.

You won't have WBBM to listen to anytime 24/7. The only feasible choice mornings and afternoons is NPR programming on the UH radio station, KUHF. (On the bright side it is crystal-clear FM radio!)
