The real color of Galveston's water (Howe: live, beach, island)

This picture on flicker shows the truest color of Galveston water I have seen in posted photos. So many of the tourism sites, it looks unrealistically blue. For those planning a visit and inquiring how the water looks - this is it.

Why is a bad idea? People are always asking about what the water is like in Galveston and this is a true depiction of it looks like and easily answers the question. Would like to also post a link that shows the sand's true look as well and not one that has been digitally enhanced to looks softer and whiter than it actually is.

These two accurately show the water and beach color too.

lol ... not as dark as root beer but when we tell people that Galveston is not a "pretty" beach - this is what we mean. No blue or green water and no white, sugar-y sand. Doesn't mean visitors don't still go, enjoy and have fun -- just means don't expect Florida or Mexico type beaches.

Do the tourists complain about the "ugly" beaches?

Most have a good time and enjoy. Those who do complain is usually because they have spent their time at other beaches that are some of the most beautiful so of course Galveston pales in comparison to those.

I grew up here and spent almost every weekend in Galveston growing up as a teen -- will probably pay for that overexposure to the sun and too many bad burns in my older years though :-(

However, once I became a traveling adult - I never set foot in Galveston's water again - I was spoiled by other beaches. When you see photos of Galveston with white, loose-packed sand and blue water - those are digital enhancements. I've lived here my entire life and never seen either of those two in Galveston. However; when the weather is cool and still - the water does appear less brown and almost has a blue hue to it on those days.

People do have tons of fun. I just now like clear water where I can see my feet in the water. Its funny though, when I go somewhere where with beautiful beaches - you often hear locals, when asked about beaches, say "I don't know, locals don't ever go there - we leave it for the tourists"

Well, Galveston needs to do something to beautify the coast.
