I'm sorry that alot of this has been discussed in other forums, but I am not having much luck finding the answers I am looking for specifically.

My family and I are relocating from Cocoa Beach, FL to Houston at the end of the summer, we want to be a little settled before school starts in September. I have never been to Houston, but my company is located on Eldridge Parkway (west side). I have been exploring Katy and Sugar Land, but have been getting mixed reviews.

This is what I am looking for:
Affordable rent ($1300 mo / single family home)
Excellent schools (my son will be in 3rd grade and in a gifted program now)
Safe
Not spending 4 hours a day in my car

We have a Boxer that loves to run, so parks in the area would be a plus.

Any suggestions?
