They eat those nasty tree roaches. Harmless.

Not sure what the snake slithering out of the hole is. It's on it's way out, so I wouldn't stress about it. I've been around poisonous snakes like rattlers my whole life and never been bitten. You typically see them in the burbs when new construction takes over a field. Lots of mice "relocate" and where they go, so do the snakes.

You're right. Based on a closer look of the photo, and comparing to some pictures online, it's most likely a Great plains rat snake. Markings match up, and they love to live in "abandoned structures". Although my pump house would be offended at such a description.
