No doubt, but all of their peers on the list, along with 3-5 others in the country, are very highly regarded and the Top 3 seem to flip flop around every couple of years. The vast majority of oncology treatment follows very well defined clinical protocols that can be administered at virtually any center, and almost every oncologist is trained in one of these highly ranked centers, so how much extra benefit does MDACC really get you? I would say where their real value comes into play is that they are chief among the centers that do the research to design and develop those protocols, so patients are getting cutting edge therapies (if they qualify for the protocol). Sometimes, those therapies are game changers, and sometimes those therapies go nowhere.

It somewhat depends on the type of cancer. I had a very rare sino-nasal tumor, and there's very few places with the ability to properly treat it. MDA has the surgeons with the right experience to successfully operate. The Proton Center provides radiation therapy that doesn't destroy brain cells and optic nerves. Without MDA, I would have had to go to NYC or Pittsburgh to get the same quality of treatment.

Absolutely. In cases like yours, the MDACC's will always be needed to treat the most rare conditions, and then, hopefully, impart that knowledge of successful outcomes on to others. All the more reason that its leadership should be good stewards of its financial resources, physical assets and, most importantly, human capital.

I'm glad to hear you had a good outcome.

The cancer center announced the cuts internally this morning via email to its about 20,000 employees.

President Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., said in a Thursday morning press conference that the cuts were necessary, even though the long-term financial health of the institution remains strong.

"We must now act in our ability to continue investing in our mission to end cancer," DePinho said.

DePinho said the shared governance committee's recommended cuts of about 800 to 900 employees will not affect their live-saving work.

"When it comes to our patients, they remain our number one priority," DePinho said.

Which, from what I read, he then donated back to the institution...but, to your point, awarding it in the first place was not a move that you would expect to generate goodwill considering the timing.

Servant leadership can go a long way.
