Hi- I just bought a house last year in Harris county and this is my first year living there on Jan 1 to qualify for the homestead exemption. I have submitted my paperwork. Is there a way to know if it was approved/processed?

Thanks.

You should receive a postcard in the mail, similar to your voter registration certificate, that will let you know that you were approved.

You can also check the Harris County Real Property Records to see if your Homestead Exemption is noted there. That's what I did. I never received any notice of approval from the county.

Here's the link. When putting in your street name, dont include "street" or "lane" or whatever -- just the name of the street.

Search by Address - Harris County Appraisal District

I think it took about a month or so for my record to be updated.

Call them. I have always found the people at HCAD to be extremely helpful - unlike FBCAD.

That's the Appraisal records, not the real property records. Those are on the Harris County Clerk's site.

Correct. But you had referred to it as "Harris County Real Property Records. What WRM20 was pointing out is that your link was to HCAD, not Harris County records.

There is a difference between the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD), and Harris County Real Property Records.. The latter is a part of the county clerk's office. The former is a separate entity that all counties in Texas have to handle property appraisals. It doesn't keep real property records, that's the function of the clerk's office.

You had the right idea, just the wrong nomenclature.

I would have called it HCAD except that clicking on the link takes you to a page entitled "Real Property Records".
