It looks like 6.5 or so to Hot Springs compared to 3.5 for Hill Country-is Hot Springs area just significantly better on certain levels in terms of scenery, ambiance of towns, etc?
Hot Springs is unique in that it's an old spa hotel town, a small city really. It's bigger than the Hill Country towns. It is also more traditionally mass-market tourist-oriented compared to many of the Hill Country towns, where the heavy tourism is a more recent phenomenon and often of a "boutique" nature.

Fredricksburg is a place noone has mentioned. A number of nice B&Bs.

I've been interested in both of those for a while -- thanks for reminding me! I've been to Crater of Diamonds and the kids had a blast there.

Thanks everyone for the good ideas. I'll add Hot Springs to the list before it gets too hot. Also been meaning to try out a visit to Fredericksburg. I've been to New Orleans a few times and it's just not for me.... the swamp tours were pretty cool, but I could have done without the rest. I'll also probably give Rockport a try. We've been out to the panhandle in Florida and really enjoyed that. It'd be nice to find a beach area closer that wasn't Galveston.

Palo Duro is not a day trip. It's over 9 hours. Really need a long weekend to get there. It is definitely a beautiful place.

Just don't waste your time "looking for diamonds"
Biggest waste of time I've ever done

Fredericksburg, TX is a great city to visit for 3-4 days. Restaurants/bars/wineries/hiking/WW2 Museum (Pedernales Falls, Hamilton Pool, and Enchanted Rock are all reasonably close). Absolute Charm rents multiple homes/B&Bs. I've used it twice. Highly recommended.

Rockport, TX for beach feel. South Padre Island for best beach in TX. New Orleans for that vibe.

Really? We actually went to Crater of Diamond 6 or 7 years ago (lived in Fort Worth at the time) and had a blast. We didn’t find any diamonds, but had a fun day outside and collected a ton of fun and unique rocks. Took them home, bought a rock tumbler, and got them all polished up. Something we’ve been wanting to do again.
