In Socal, we have a concept of being able to opt for charter schools instead of public schools. The state pays for those charter schools with vouchers so that not much comes out of our own pockets. Does it work the same way in TX? How are the quality of charter schools in suburban areas such as Sugarland, Cypress?

KIPP, Yes Prep, and Harmony are probably the best known charter schools in the area. I don't know anyone who attends one, but have heard through other parents that the quality varies greatly from campus to campus. If you are in HISD, there is a school choice concept that allows you the option to apply to nearly any other school in the district. Not sure how it works in the suburbs, but I think it's more "move into the zone you want and send your kid to those schools."
