We may possibly be relocating to the Houston area in a year and want to get info. on the type of education avail. for special needs children. My son will be going into 8th grade at the time of our relocation. He has severe MR and Develop. Disabilities. Would he be included in his home area school with a self contained classroom? We'd probably be considering the Katy, Sugar Land areas, due to the fact that we also need a good High School for our daughter. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'd go with Katy or Spring Branch ISD for special needs. Both are very well known for their programs and are very flexible as to your child's individual needs. Inclusion (w/ or w/o shadow) depends on your son's issues, but both districts favor it. Both districts have excellent high schools as well. Katy has Cinco Ranch HS, Katy-Taylor HS, and Katy HS (Morton Ranch HS and Mayde Creek HS are not as good, though they are fine). SBISD has Memorial HS, Stratford HS, Spring Woods HS, and Northbrook (all but Northbrook are rated "Exemplary" or "Recognized").

Good luck!!

Besides finding a school district that matches your needs, it's also a good idea to get training on advocating for your child -- I'm going to a training session this weekend sponsored by TX Parent 2 Parent (txp2p . org) and another training session in August sponsored by Wright's Law. Both of these provide training on special education.

There is a local organization called Family to Family (located in Houston off of Route 529 just east of Route 6) that can provide a lot of help to you with your specific question too. It is for families with children with disabilities. familytofamilynetwork . org
