We would like to go to Houston for a 4 day weekend and would like some info on what to do with 3 kids I was looking to stay in the downtown area near the Galleria is that safe at night? If anyone can recommend some good places to eat, Italian etc that would be great... Thanks in advance for your help!

Galleria area is actually considered "uptown" . Very safe are. Our Zoo is great and is over in the Museum district. Speaking of Museum district, there are several Museums to check out there also.

If you go downtown it is cool for the kiddos to check out the big buildings. If you are there on a Friday or a Monday remeber a lot of downtown is connected via an underground tunnel. This is interesting to check out.

Also downtown is the "Downtown Aquarium" cool restaurant/amuzement setup.

Kemah boardwalk would be a great excusion from Houston. About a 45 minute drive on the weekends.

Also might be cool to see what is happening at the Toyota centre, Reliant centre etc. Fun to ride the Metrorail from downtown through the Museum district over to the reliant area.

Downtown is different from the Galleria area. Galleria is about 15min drive down Memorial from downtown. Either area is safe. Dont miss Discovery Green, a great park near Minute Maid. If you stay downtown ride the train to the museum district and stop over at Prego for Italian food in Rice Village. There is also a great little Italian place on Main begins with a M...someone help me out. I cant think of the name now.

On weekends traffic may be lighter near downtown. You need to see the San Jacinto monument. See what shape the Kemah boardwalk is in, Tour NASA, day trip to Galveston? Museum district via train.

Kemah boardwalk is in GREAT shape, I was there over the holidays, it is a lot of fun. Nasa is fun but holy crap was it crowded the day I went. I personally love the Museum district and the Galleria area...because I'm a serious shopper...but also like the restaurants, ice skating, people watching, some of the cool fountains in and outside the mall.

I'm seconding the museum recommendation. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is amazing for curious children from younger (Butterfly Exhibit) to older (all the other exhibits).

A few more good places to take kids (depending on their ages) is the Children's Museum, the San Jacinto Monument, and the battleship USS Texas. If y'all go to the Monument and the Texas, ride the Lynchburg Ferry from I-10 East near Baytown.

An interesting place to dine if you head to the Monument is Monument Inn. If you like seafood, they have it!

If it is a sunny, clear day, take them to one of the downtown tall buildings' observation decks. Information and other ideas can be found here: family fun (make sure you check beforehand if going on a weekend).

Discovery Green park is also a fun place to spend a few hours.
