Ballys and 24 hour fitness have MUCH cheaper rates, but there has to be a reason why they are so much cheaper than Lifetime Fitness.

Which ones have any of you used, and which would you recommend?

Lifetime Fitness is way, way nicer than the other choices if you are looking for a full-featured fitness center. Lifetime has a cafe, a hair salon, massage therapists, several pools, lots of programs and classes for a variety of ages, a Kids Club with computers and a play area, etc.

If you just want a gym where you can use some exercise equipment, then the other options are fine and much more affordable.

but is it worth paying $105 a month at Lifetime vs. $30 a month at the other places?

It just depends on what atmosphere and amenities you want. For my family, Lifetime is worth it. For others, not. Make a list of what you want at a fitness center or gym and compare which choices offer those things.

Which gym you is best for you depends on how you will use it.

Do you need child care? If so make sure to visit the facility during the time you plan to use it. Is it crowded or chaotic? Do the staff interact with the kids? What are the security measures for dropping off and picking up?

Do you pan to use the pool? Do you want to swim laps or relax? Find out what your options are. What are the hours for "adult swim" etc?

Plan to take group classes? Get a schedule, do they offer the classes you want when you plan to go? Many gyms charge extra for popular classes or classes that need special equipment like reformer Pilates or Spinning. If you want to take those find out if there's an extra charge.

Planning to use the equipment? Visit during the time you plan to be there. Is the place crowded? How often is the equipment updated? Do you need someone to show you how to use it? Ask. Same goes for weight room.

Planning to use the locker room and showers? Check them out. Is it clean, crowded or whatever? I know Lifetime offers a towel service. Is that important to you because you pay for it whether you use it or not.
