I was on another board and it referenced three housing developments under construction on or near Hal Greer Blvd...no details provided. Does anyone have any info on these?
They are supposed to be low income senior housing. Two are right on Hal Greer across from the old White Way Laundry. The other one is much larger and is on 8th Ave on the east side of 20th Street.
Currently it seems that the plan is to tear off the back portion of the building, stabilize the slip and then rebuild the back. I'm pretty sure Target actually owns the land and building there after settling that occurred about 20 years ago so it has a little more stake in the whole thing. If it were only leasing the land and building, I'd say that they would be looking to move but not likely in this situation. Plus, there currently isn't a quick and easy place for them to move as there's not enough room at Tanyard Station or the mall.
I'd love to see a new development in Huntington come out of this. There is a lot of land right off of exit 11 that the city has already extended water and sewer lines most of the way to. One entity owns 94 acres there and if combined with other land, it could be about 150 acre development. For Comparison, Tanyard Station is about 50 acres. This land would be right across I-64 from Kinetic Park. If the city annexed the land and created a TIF district there, it would work well. It would have high visibility from the interstate and easy access. It would make Huntington proper even more attractive and be a nice addition to the city not only for convenience but for the increased tax money as well. Get some new stores like Costco, Harris Teeter, etc and you'd pull people from Ohio and Kentucky too. I'm hearing a rumor that Publix is looking at the city so maybe something like this could come to fruition.
Cabell County Commission to consider new district to encourage housing development/redevelopment:
Quote:
The commission is asking for a district to be created under the Better United in Long-term Development (BUILD) West Virginia Act. If the district is approved by the development office, the county will have tax breaks for developers who want to increase Cabell County’s housing stock, Commission President Kelli Sobonya said at Thursday’s regular commission meeting.
The BUILD Act creates a district with a 20-mile radius. Entities in a county can create a district, Sobonya said.
