Just wondering in the Huntsville city limits, is a permit required for a backyard pergola? If not, what restrictions apply, size, distance from dwelling, etc.? Thanks.

I would think Home Depot or Lowe's could tell you if no one here knows.

Here is info from the city inspection dept.

If there are no restrictions from the City, don't forget to check with the HOA, if you have one.

Most importantly, check with your wife for permission.

A nagging wife is a PITA life.

It has to be a female-designed structure - a male would put a real roof over his head .

Just kidding - but I did build a pergola at my wife's insistence.

Please DO check with HOA. Long story short. We had verbal approval from Architectural Review Committee, one year later an unpleasant letter, visit and verbal approval from then ARC president, three months later certified letter stating we are three months behind in fine payments and have 48 hours to pay up or lien will be placed, lots of calls and tears and we paid, I joined the HOA Board, a year later the same again. Several hundred dollars, a lot of head aches later - we moved:>) PM should anyone in the Birmingham area be interested in more details.

Thanks for everyone's input. No HOA, no wife to ask permission, just want an outdoor sitting spot for maybe morning java and a news paper, brunch, or a light evening snack.
