Depends upon your experience, but it is fairly easy. Huntsville has the 2nd largest research company in the country with a focus on Army, NASA and BioTech.

Depends on your background...I know of one employer who is begging for software engineers and runs an average of 95 openings a month.

Are you a developer or a network guy?

Dice.com has about 300 IT jobs posted for Huntsville right now. I personally have two of them posted. There is definitely no shortage of jobs for Intermediate / Senior IT people. If you are looking in the junior range, you may have a little more of a problem.

Bravo35223, BKOTH97 and autobahn

I am not a developer. I am looking for a desktop/server position in Huntsville. Do you think I can find this position easily or not?

My husband got an offer job in Huntsville, and we are trying to find what my employment prospects would be like.

Thank you all for replying my post and helping me out with my search.

All this Junior/Senior stuff has me confused. One person considers me Senior, the next Junior... who knows.

I figure with 6 years in IT I'm probably still Junior or intermediate... but my job title here in DC is Senior Business Analyst. Of course, that title is entirely misleading since 80% of my time is spent doing technical database work (Oracle PL/SQL).

I guess the reason I'm having a harder time finding the right position in Huntsville is that all the ads seem to be for "specialists" in one thing or another - while I'm more of a generalist. I've been a ASP.NET programmer, Java Programmer, PL/SQL developer, Oracle DBA, Requirements Analyst, System Administrator... hell, you name it, all in my short 6 year career (and with the SAME company! albeit a big one, and at a NASA site no less lol). I thought I'd be a shoe-in, but it really means I haven't spent a ton of time in any one thing... which is hurting me I think.

I guess I'm kinda screwed. I had begun work toward a masters in Software Engineering, but now the wife and I are wanting to move to H-ville before I could complete that, so my education is on hold until after the move.

In many cases, the titles are dependent on the specific company that you are working with. More experience can make up for the lack of formal education in many positions, especially IT. However, having the formal education means that you can get to the Senior level faster and opens up the possibilities for Principle and Management positions (if you are interested in that).

Junior / Member Technical Staff etc = BS and 0-2 Years Experience / No College and 0-6 years
Intermediate = BS and 3-7 Years / No College 7 - 12 Years
Senior = BS and 8+ Years / No College 12+ Years
Principle = MS and 8+ Years / BS and 12+ Years (it is very difficult to get to this level without a college degree)

Again, this is just an example from companies that I am familiar with and should not be considered gospel.

Default Need a little direction

Hello everyone,

I was just recently laid off 3 weeks ago. I have lived in Atlanta for the last 17 years. I have done pretty good but my parents are getting older and I would like to be near them to look in on them more and spend more time with them. I worked as a contracter on a CDC (Centers of Disease Control) contract for the last ten years as a Lead Support Specialist (doing helpdesk, desktop, networking and anything else they wanted if I could do it. I would like to move back to Alabama. Can anyone suggest a company to look into, recruiter, anything to help me make this transistion.

Thanks,
moving home

Here is one place to check.. https://joblink.alabama.gov/ada/
You might want to check Redstone Federal Credit union.. They have a helpdesk IIRC.
Not sure how the pay will compare to Atlanta though.
