My family is looking to relocate to CDA next summer from Southern California. We HATE California with a passion and are looking to find a better place to raise our kids. With that being said, I've read a lot of these posts that say that people from Idaho hate Californians and that makes me really nervous. We are not coming to Idaho to make it anything like California. There is a reason we are moving out of California and not looking back.
Should I be worried about relocating me, my hubby and our 3 small boys to CDA?

Hello M-Nitti,

Me and my wife will also be Ca. transplants to Northern Idaho in the near future and have read 1000's of posts here on the Idaho forum.

I've seen some post as you describe and really it's mostly directed to not bring Ca. with you to Idaho, become part of the Idaho culture and leave the commie Ca. culture right where it belongs here in Ca.

I think some people blame people from Ca. for higher home prices, taking a job that they feel should have gone to Idahoan

I remember back in the 70's and 80's we felt the same about others moving to Ca., I even had a bumper sticker on my truck back window that said "Welcome To California, Now Go Home".

If you go to Hawaii you would find the same thing, the dislike of people from the mainland.

I really don't think there is any problem moving to CDA, I'm sure all will be fine.

I have read that people tend to get Idaho plates on the car ASAP and probably try to avoid using the phrase "Well when we were back in Ca. this is the way we did this or that or whatever.

We went up the the Sandpoint area back in February an it was really nice and had a great time, people were very friendly, no problems. I live up in the Ca. Sierra's between Tahoe and Placerville and in my case it was more or less like where I currently live, conservative people, a slower pace of life.

This^^^

As long as you are moving to Idaho to live in Idaho, and not try to tell everyone how much better California is, you'll be fine.

Curious though: isn't this thread right here: //www.city-data.com/forum/idaho...pe-reform.html
Isn't it by Californians looking to pass legislation from California? Most of the ex-Californians here don't try this but isn't this kind of the idea that new people coming into the state looking to make Idaho more into what their perception of Idaho should be?

And yes, there are some people who do blame Californians for their problems and there is some California hate but honestly, those people are not really people worth your time anyway.

I just moved to Ketchum from California, and everyone has been kind and welcoming, both locals and transplants. I have also visited the Sandpoint area and Schweitzer, and I also found people friendly and welcoming. So I see no issues, but certainly don't know about other parts of Idaho.

When we owned our fencing company we ran into some people who really had it in for an elderly woman who had just lost her husband (in the Sandpoint/Sagle area). I saw the signs they posted all around their border with her land (facing her land) that ranted about hating Californians and "Califonians go home".

I have no idea what their side was but there is no condoning behavior like that. But it does happen here. People like to have someone to blame their problems on.

The last time I was in Sun Valley it seemed everyone I met was from somewhere else...

I really don't remember meeting someone that was 4 or 5 generation living in Idaho.

My 85 year old neighbors in California are Idaho born and raised... like so many... the military brought them to California and they stayed...

A lot of people have ties to California so it is only natural to find them around the country.

Three people I have worked with retired and all moved to Idaho... all 3 are retired Doctors and one went to be close to his daughter... she married someone she met in College in California that was from Idaho... now her mom and dad decided to retire there... sold their California home and are now settled.

Wow, that is surprising and terrible. All of my neighbors have gone out of their way to introduce themselves and offer help, etc. They see my California plates and I tell them where I am from if asked. I am in no hurry to change out my plates, especially since I just paid the enormous California renewal fee. Thought I would get at least some of my money's worth before the 90 day limit for registration happens here.
Even the locals at the post office and grocery store have been kind and thoughtful, and likely far friendlier than I have experienced in California. But then my area is also a blending pot of sorts.

Yes, some of my neighbors in Ketchum are locals (can't say I know how many generations, though). I did meet a neighbor from Wisconsin. Maybe the locals are more tolerant here because of the mix. I think a lot of the young people here come from all over to ski and work for awhile, and then move on.

I'd guess I am 5th generation Californian with 4 of those generations California born.

I love Western Washington and always feel right at home... with California plates or Washington rental car plates...

I think friendly people meet friendly people for the most part.

Since I'm starting every paragraph with "I"... let me say it doesn't matter where you are from as long as you are happy to be where you are...
