Come Jan 1st Utah is requiring proof of legal status before acquiring either a new DL or to renew one.

The downside (for citizens and legal residents) is that they have also taken away the renew online or by mail option. Too bad they can't institute some way of being able to do that once you've actually SHOWN valid proof (surely they could flag your DL that it's been done and restore that option for those that have?)

LAW CHANGES:
Effective January 1, 2010, Utah Driver License Division has big changes that affect EVERYONE:
ALL applicants are required to provide the following when needing a duplicate (including applying for an endorsement), applying for or renewing a Utah Driver License, Original Utah Driver License, Utah Driving Privilege Card, or Utah Identification Card:

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate in English or accompanied by a translated copy if in another language) by showing evidence of original or copies certified by the issuing agency;
  • Proof of legal/lawful presence;
  • Proof of social security number or ITIN;
  • Two proofs of Utah residence address, if it is different than the address on your current Utah record; and
  • Evidence of name change, if applicable

That's good, surprising in Utah. It's funny 'cause Utah's Senator voted for The Dream Act bill today, lol. And there is that ol' ITIN again.

Yeah but there ARE legal residents who only have ITINs as they're not eligible for a SSN (non immigrants for example), but they DO have to supply proof of legal status.

Wonderful news! I know Utah has a large illegal alien population. This should hit them hard. Requiring EVERYONE to show proof of status is the best option, no contest. Now see how us the legal residents have to deal this crap because the illegal aliens, the ones who are not lawfully belonging this country, gaming the DMV? Good move nonetheless, Utah.

As I said, in this day and age there HAS to be a way a DL could be flagged after a one time show of hard copy proof so that legal residents and citizens could still utilise the convenience of online or mail in renewals.

I know here in WA you can do an online renewal every second renewal. The other times you have to show your face for a new photo to be taken. It's too bad they only ask for proof of WA residence rather than legal residency status, but I'm sure it will come eventually.

I'm guessing Utah doesn't want to take chances. You can't fault that given how rampant fraud is with illegal aliens.

Case in point..........the illegals are still trying to circumvent the system in this state......Totally aside from the fact this kid is illegal, residing in another state is also flouting the laws, but then we already know they don't feel the laws should apply to THEM.

I don't disagree with these new regs, but is it really better to have a bunch of unidentifiable, unlicensed drivers driving around?

Gosh, how about they just follow the damn law and don't drive at all if they're not legally entitled to one?
