America spends untold amounts of money on English emersion classes becuase that's one way to force "YOUR" will upon others. As you can see, in some areas of the USA it doesn't work out so well.

Like I said before, English is only the De Facto language of the USA. It's not the official language of the USA even though you feel it is.

Also ironic that the self same ones yelling si se puede are also the ones with their knickers in a knot if states seek to cut funding for ESL classes. Go figure.

The sad truth (according to my native spanish speaking friends) is that more and more they see an underclass (mostly illegals) who are ending up illiterate in BOTH languages.

The first generation of any immigrant group finds it harder to assimulate, with each succesive generation assimulation and language skills increase.

Illiteracy was one of the defining reasons the US Supreme court struck down a Texas law restricting funding for illegal alien children in public schools. Plyler v. doe.

I was unaware that immigrants who lawfully come to the USA are required by some mythological mandate to assimilate to your likeness?

Funny!
Whatever the number is pouring in everday it is astronomical. No, immigrants aren't required to assimilate to MY likeness but what is the point of coming here if they don't want to be a part of our culture and speak our language?

I don't have the stats readily available but I know it has been posted in here before that the "immigrants" of today are not assimilating like the early immigrants did. There are many that have been here for years and still can't speak English. Many of those stories have been posted in this forum. Many who do speak English won't use it as their primary language of usage.

Being that English is the de facto language of this country does not take away its place in our society as the identifying one that is a part of our heritage and culture. Spanish isn't the official language of Mexico either but it is a definate part of their heritage and culture.

Yeah, the places where that isn't workiing out so well is with a culture of people who want us to be their cash cow but refuse to assimilate into our society and are colonizing instead.

True, but not a racial or ethnic issue, kids nowadays defy education like never before, we have alarming rates of school desertion, every year the amount of functional illiterates in the usa grow exponentially, and it respects no ethnic boundaries, our society is becoming an underclass, in fact, hispanics in general, according to the census statistics are getting better education while growing very fast in numbers....

Illegals don't have to assimilate. All they "have" to do is live in the shadows speaking Spanish and praying they don't get deported.

All they need to do is go to Puerto Rico...the documentation there is so messed up, now they are making Puerto Ricans get legal paperwork, and most of them are not Puerto Rican! They will now accept a baptism certificate to get a passport there...imagine that...and Puerto Ricans are considered US citizens.

Has it occured to you that one of the reasons our own kids aren't getting a good education is because the teachers are having to take extra time with these illegal kids or anchors that don't speak English?

If your last statement is true then why is it that Hispanics have the highest school drop-out rates? Yes, they are growing in numbers alright mostly due to illegal immigration. I don't know about you but I object to that.
