For the first time in the most current wave of immigration, U.S. Census Bureau figures show that 70 percent of California's Mexican population are U.S. citizens, blunting widespread belief the state is overrun by illegal immigrant
So by this great state having the most Mexicans, and 70% of them are citizens...I infer that ratio to be true for most of United States.
Who cares, the reality is that they are mostly legal, and the un documented ones usually have anchor babies to assure their own stay, their population will continue growing at more than twice the national average for years to come.

I think that's the problem right there.
People whose ancestors came from Germany and are citizens of the USA see themselves as Americans.
But Mexicans will still say they are Mexicans -- which are citizens of Mexico even if they have USA citizenship for the benefits and money. There aren't many people of German ancestry who wave the German flag and boast of their patriotism to Germany. They've given up patriotism to that foreign nation and are simply proud Americans.
