That's pretty much speculation. When part of the U.S did belong to Mexico, in California, there were missions. Lots and lots of missions. Don't look too bad :
That's because it belongs to California now.
This is the part that belongs to Mexico now - see the difference?

Not the best point you could have made, Californio. Mexico only owned California for a very short time....during which most of the missions were 'secularized', their properties sold off or given away to government' cronies' (some locals, some gringos), and largely left to fall into ruin for many decades.
By all means, use all the examples you want...but the relationship between the short-lived rule of Mexico, and the mission system, wasn't a 'pretty story' at all. Mexico didn't "build" the missions, it inherited them....and then pretty much trashed them. Look it up.

Thank you, Guy. Though these guys don't look, at first glance, as if they'd have any strong opinions on the California Mission system either "pro" or "con", any support is welcome.

I wasn't sure if anyone else even knew the story of the Spanish missions in California, but I was grateful that you did. Do you think you'll get any acknowledgment from Californio, or will we be destined to listen to more *crickets*?
