Just like I suspected, a few days after the terrible earthquake there is calls in Congress to allow more flexible immigration rules for people in America illegally from Haiti.
Here is what our leaders want to do:
Increase immigration quotas for legal immigration from Haiti
Eliminate all deportations of people to Haiti
Grant an estimated 30,000 Haitian nationals Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, an immigration benefit long sought by those involved in the debate. This would allow people illegally in America from Haiti to never leave us because TPS never ends. Many citizens of a number of Central American Countries have been protected from deportation for over 10 years ago because of a hurricane from 1998.
What should we do when the Haitian Boat People start coming?
It is only a matter of time before large number of Haitians attempt to leave their country on boats. What should be done when hundreds of boats leave their shores heading for America? Should we send them back home or let them stay here in America? (If we let them stay more will follow) If we send them back we will be criticized.
Maybe it's about time the TPS was looked into to ensure that the conditions still require it. It would be a little inhumane to deport (repatriate?) people to a location that has just suffered what Haiti has, but that doesn't mean they get to stay here forever OR that we should look the other way if more come in illegally.
The reaction isn't all that surprising though, given the amount of bleeding hearts we have in the USA.
I don't know if this is true or not, but someone posted on another board that a massive airlift from Haiti to the US has been approved, and MN is to get the first group.
TPS might be the humane thing to do, but I'm really not for accepting refugees. I'd rather we helped tham rebuild their own coiuntry. However, if it comes to accepting them, it should be strictly enforced. There should be a two year limit. Refugees should not be allowed to leave the county they're settled in, and should keep a cuurent address on file with ICE at all times. Any failure to do so should trigger immediate deportation.
You do know that one of the main reasons so few Haitians qualify for LEGAL immigration is due to health issues? (Our health that is - many contagious diseases are endemic in Haiti)

No matter what America does, She will always receive criticism regardless of Her efforts.
Let's continue to aid the people and help as much as we can to get them back on their feet, but not by changing the laws now. Those that arrive by boat should be given temporary help and then returned to Haiti to help with the rebuilding effort in their country...

YES, YES, YES! It's the right thing to do at this time. Republica Dominicana has already done the same for undocumented Haitians. I will be back later with more information.
If D.R can do it being that they are a much poorer country, we should too.
