The grass is not always greener on the other side of the ______. States, counties and cities are NOT created equally. In a bad winter it is hard to avoid snow. In the spring it is hard to avoid the flood, in the fall it is hard to avoid the tornado. If you want to avoid all of it then go to the SW. If you like scorching hot summer then go to Las Cruses or Phoenix or Palm Springs or Las Vegas. If like it a bit cooler than move north toward I-40. If you go too far north you will quickly learn how cold a dry winter is in the NM and AZ mountains.

Regardless of the state, generally speaking the county seat is where the best services are. The exception is if there is a much larger town in the county? If so it will have the best services: fastest internet, hospital most stores, and best city services. The County Fire and Police, however will still be located near the county seat. Chicago is a good example. It is the seat of Cook County, and it has the best of everything. Cook County Police and Fire are near Chicago, but not in the City of Chicago as those are county serves, and not city services.

Illinois has four forms of government to take your taxes: State, City/Town/Village, County and Township. Townships are generally 6 miles square, and maintain 71,000 miles of Illinois roads in our counties. Counties maintain US Highways in each county. City and State maintian Interstate Routes. Cook and Chicago may well be different due to the number of wide surface roads in the city and county of which 1-55, 1-80 are two examples of smaller roads.

I've got lots of folks moving from Illinois to Austin,TX. It's terrible how bad the taxes are there. This is a great area to consider.

I advise anyone with a business to take a very close look at TX business taxes before moving. Real Estate taxess are just as high as Central Illinois. The real taxes on a 3/2 SFH in a town not too far from Dallas is $5K. In Central Illinois it is $3500 for the same age in a nice neighborhood except this house has a full basement and an attached double car garage. The TX house I speak of has the attached garage but no basement. It's on a slab foundation.

Yes but Texas doesn't have a 7.75% corporate income tax rate in addition to real esate taxes. In fact, Texas has no corporate nor individual income tax at all.

Yes, TX does have a structured businesses tax and real estate tax. Additionally some jurisdictions assess personal property taxes on boats, vehicles, etc., but not all jurisdictions do. Texas also collects late fees. If you buy your friend's car you pay a state vehicle tax, too.

"The Texas Comptroller's office serves the state by collecting more than 60 separate taxes, fees and assessments, including local sales taxes collected on behalf of more than 1,400 cities, counties and other local governments around the state."

Here is the list. Texas Taxes

Good News. Nationally Chicago is the #1 Metro market for business, Illinois is the #3 state for new and expanding businesses, and it is also the #1 state in renewable energy use.

Maybe Illinois isn't such a bad state afterall?

Exactly, myself included. Illinois is in so much financial trouble due to our kindergarten governor, it's pathetic.

The current financial mess has virtually nothing to do with Quinn.

Hmmm.... 2013 #3 in American business Illinois brought 383 new and expanding corporations to IL many of which moved to the #1 metro market in America and brought jobs.

Quinn inherited a mess that Helmet Boy helped deepen with his nightly trips home compliments of state vehicles which Quinn promptly sold, and/or stopped personal use. If you want to fly home there are trains and planes in Springfield and Chicago.

When you leave an Alpha+ city you quickly find out just exactly what you don't have. It is usually an expensive lesson.
