I went through a tornado when I was a kid in northern Indiana. I get this "feeling" when I feel a tornado coming now and I get so annoyed with the siren system down here. They put it on even if there isn't a tornado coming. There were a few times this summer when I heard the sirens, looked out the window and turned on my weather scanner ... get a weather scanner, that's the best resource for weather information IMHO. I went to the basement once, but all the other times, we just sat in the living room watching the storm.

realistically, what do you think a person's chances are of getting blown away by a tornado in Indiana? about the same as Purdue's chances to beat Notre Dame this Saturday.

hope Joe Tiller doesn't come onto this forum. I heard he's been busy drinking Irish Power Cola and feeding lots of it to his team.

I was working in personal lines insurance and saw the devastation the Plainfield IL tornado caused ..wiped out the entire town without warning.

I live in Joliet and we just had a tornado minutes from our house last year or the year before. Ottawa was devastated as well just a few years back.

Sorry but it is just plain silly not to have a basement. Chances of being wiped out by a tornado in the Midwest? Just ask someone who thought that before their houses were destroyed and family members killed.

Personally, I would never live without a basement. Not only for the tornado risk but also for storage.

Also, a home on a basement can more easily be built up, added onto. Slabs you're pretty much stuck with what you have and it's pretty well slapped together quickly.

I'm not sure that I agree that basements are the best place for seeking protection in a tornado. Many people are killed when the houses collapse in on them while they're down in the basement. Sure it's better to go there if you have one, get under a stairwell or sturdy piece of furniture, but an inground storm shelter, which runs about $3000-3500 is a far safer option. Also, basements in areas where they aren't walkout tend to have water seepage issues, stay damp, and cause issues down the road. I prefer a designated storm shelter as I know if the house goes, it won't.

Maybe I am a believer in just having one hole as opposed to two. do you have any statistics showing how many people have been crushed to death in their basements/cellars as a result of tornadoes?
