I second the recommendation of Madison for its wonderful old homes and very picturesque setting. Lots of hilly, green area and the Ohio River there is awesome. Cinci & Louisville are both very nearby. The weather in this southern part of the state is typically 10 degrees warmer than the northern part, during the winter months. I was born in northern, IN, but due to job transfers have been in the southern portion 25 years now. Valpo is nice in the north, but Lafayette is the best northern city in my opinion, however, it is has relatively limited forested area as it is a farming area. If you are looking for lots of forested area, go to southern, IN where there are numerous communities where you can find what you are looking for along the Ohio River.

Yes, I love the older neighborhoods near Downtown Valpo as they do have a lot of charm and character. In fact, I know a good friend that lives near the old square there.

Evansville if you live in the East Side or Newburgh but is picturesque, cosmopolitan because of the large companies and near St. Louis and Louisville. The basketball is wildly successful here (well, UE not so much) Hockey and soccer abound. Kids are educated well, lots of churches and synagogues, and wonderful volunteer opportunities for resume enhancement.

Moved here about 10 years ago for a job opportunity and have never regretted it. Very reasonable cost of living and friendly people. Noblesville,Carmel and Westfield are nice areas but Howard,Tipton and Miami counties have a lower cost of living and a more rural feel to them but still only about an hour or so outside of Indy.

Valpo, Bloomington, the area around Floyd's Knobs and Starlight, and around Angola.

Madison, Bloomington, Rockville. I think Vincennes has merit as well. And Evansville is nice, if you need something slightly larger. There are some beautiful neighborhoods Downtown. I also really like Aurora, which is nice if you're commuting to Cincinnati.

Bloomington without question. Or anywhere from Bloomington to Columbus.

I'm into nature alot. It's more beautiful in southern Indiana because of nature. It's more farming in the northern part of Indiana.

This thread is interesting. My in-laws live in Indiana (Muncie) but I don't like that city at all, and am not familiar with any other part of the state. I had researched Bloomington and it sounds really nice, how does it compare to Madison? Madison sounds interesting. How far is Madison from Muncie?

OP, didn't mean to hijack your thread, but hoping it helps to add or expand the discussion, since I am interested as well! I like the same things you do - nature, historic, artsy, etc.

Madison.

One of my coworkers lives in Madison and commutes to Indy every day. He loves living in Madison so he doesn't mind the commute 5 days a week.
