I found a place that I liked in Indianapolis and will be moving very soon. It is located on the edge of Meridian-Kessler (on a street near 42nd & Central). I would love to hear from anyone who knows this area and can tell me where to go, what to eat, and where to stay away from. I would also like to get out and bike and walk the dogs so I would like to hear a suggested route that would be safe. Tell me about shopping, groceries and anything else you can think of that will help. Thanks in advance for your help!

I just bought a house not too far from there - near Meridian Kessler/Butler. I move in mid-July so I don't know too much yet, but here's what I've been told:

1. Great place to eat is a deli/restaurant called the Illinois Street Food Emporium. I know the family that owns it - and didn't even realize that until I moved here! Their chicken salad is sooo good. It's near the shops on 53rd and Illinois.
2. A fun family/swim place is the Riviera Club aka "The Riv." Not sure if you have kids - but people seem to like this place.
3. For good produce, I heard the farmer's market in Broad Ripple is fun and nice. Also, new Fresh Market is opening in the area.
4. For biking/walking/running, check out the Monon Trail. If you don't want to walk to it, you can drive and park to it in Broad Ripple.

I am also curious to see what people write in response - I have a lot to learn about the area!

49th and Penn has Cafe Patachou for breakfast. Nice corner with a Sullivan's Hardware. That same area on Pennsylvania (42nd and north)and the surrounding areas have hugely expensive homes (think 5 figure real estate taxes) and is a wonderful place to walk with lots of trees. I used to have a 4 mile route to walk and it was wonderful anywhere there. It only gets dicier on the east side closer to the State Fair area(between 38th and 46th) but would still walk during the day.

56th and Illinois used to be around the corner from our house. Drug store, grocery, restaurants, fire station, etc.

Check out some of the new stuff on 54th around Winthrop. There is an Italian restaurant, breakfast place, some new stores, etc.
