A poke is a way of saying "Hi" to someone. It just means that they want you to know that they are thinking of you. You can poke the person back if you want to, or ignore it. It's up to you.

I had a couple of Facebook friends who would poke me almost every day even though we only knew each other online and not in real life. I would be polite and always poke them back until it got really annoying. It was starting to feel like elementary school, when some kid who's a pest and really your friend keeps throwing spitballs at you to get your attention. When I'd had enough I stopped responding to their pokes, and they stopped doing it.
