Applying my choices later in the year in both 2021 and 2022 was not good. In 2022 the delay cost $12,301.52 vs investing at the start. Considering the historical average 10% market gain, delaying is usually not as good. My results in both years were much worse then that, so it's as early as possible for me from now on.
Regarding dividends, Yahoo always includes them automatically, Fidelity always keeps them invested for me, and I would think that Google does that too but haven't used it so don't know. They're always a part of people's investments and don't just vanish, so I see no reason to remove them.
A comparison of 5 vs 4 vs 3 stock picks for 2022 is interesting and applies to all years having the same three choices. Below are the results based on placings.
The average placing for:
the 36 people who picked 5 stocks was 22.06;
for the 12 people who picked 4 stocks was 27.33;
& for the 4 people who picked 3 stocks was 35.50. The overall average was 24.5.
Those who picked 5 stocks placed 14 in the top 16 results. Calculating based on totals would likely show much bigger gaps.
