The best estimates place fully 1/3 of all American Muslims as being made up from African American converts. It is a bit difficult to determine how many African Americans have converted to Islam as the ones converting to NOI get counted as converted to Islam in the Statistics. They are 2 different Religions but with some similarities

The majority of Islamic Nations do not threaten apostates with death. The threat of death for apostates would be a big hindrance to Islamic Growth as that would stop most people from ever converting. I can not imagine anyone converting to a religion that killed apostates.
And why should I care what the sheikh says? Amusingly, Westerners seem to think that Muslims have to readily obey the commands and commentaries of any imam. One can easily post an article or video of a scholar disagreeing with the death sentence rule. And no, it is irrelevant if they are the minority.

It is like arguing that the vast majority of Christians ascribe to the ramblings of Pat Robertson.
There are too many what ifs in islam. Such as.... if one particular imam had not declared that the manipulation of numbers was the work of the devil..... would the golden age of Muslim science have been such that not just the economic but scientific landscape of our world not be ENTIRELY different.

We know that in some (not all) Muslim countries a lot of Muslims are indeed signed up to killing apostates.
