I currently live in south Florida and plan on relocating to either Jacksonville or Gainesville (poss tampa). I am tired of the south florida scene. I have been to both cities but not sure which I prefer so just looking for other's opinions. I am a nurse and know both cities have a few good hospitals to choose from for employment. Although I'm a 42 year old single woman, I'm not looking for a crazy nightlife. I just want to move somewhere that has a decent salary/cost of living ratio and a decent dating scene.

IMO, Tampa #1, Jacksonville #2, Gainesville #3.

Gainesville is a college town.

So......

Not really a comparison. Totally different.

Agree with this.

Gainesville is centered around UF. Outside of that, Gainesville is pretty boring. In the middle of nowhere. They have a few medical facilities, but not as much as Tampa.

I don't know much about Jacksonville. No personal experience, but others have said it is not very pretty and kind of boring. Near St. Augustine, which I have been and is pretty. Other than the touristy stuff, I don't know what daily life is like around the Jacksonville/St. Augstine area.

I live in Tampa, so I guess of those mentioned, I would prefer Tampa. There is a large medical center (Moffitt, VA Hospital, Florida Hospital, Tampa General, just to name a few). It has some nightlife, though you said that is not important, fun things to do (kayaking, biking trails, St. Petersburg activities, museums, theatre, near nice beaches, etc.).

Thank you so much for the responses. I was leaning away from Gainesville. I am definitely going to look more into Tampa!

Never thought of Tallahassee, what is it like? Isn't another "college town"?

You have selected 3 metros of very different sizes. Gainesville is about 250,000, JAX is about 1.4 mil and Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater is about 4.3 mil.

Pluses and minuses obviously. A bigger population offers more things to do and places to go, but leads to more traffic.

No, Tallahassee does have many colleges, but it is a city. It is the state capital of florida, and is a great place to live.

Florida State University, FAMU, TCC schools and many branches of other schools.

It has wonderful hills, tons of trees. It is very beautiful and has the right blend of city, without to much traffic.

I've never been to Tallahassee. How are the restaurants, nightlife, etc? Is it similar or comparable to any other areas in Florida?
