I just came across his posting. The historic neighborhood is ok. I live here and don't have problems but then again I moved from a big city. If you are not used to "city living" then I can see how different people could make you feel uncomfortable. If you have lived in a big city before then its nothing different. Considering everything I would recommend living here if you are comfortable around different socioeconomic and demographics types and are smart enough to keep your gps locked in your glove compartment. It's a great neighborhood if you like the "artsy" scene and historic neighborhoods but still has a ways to go concerning restaurants and the Main street area. I like the restaurants here but there's room for a lot more. Then again downtown is close by so it's all relative.

Since we're on the topic of comfortability in the neighborhood....

A mommies group held an event at Sailors & Sparrows, a new children's store, and they seemed comfortable.

Sailors and Sparrows - an eco family boutique

A web design company is moving from Mandarin to the neighborhood, they seem comfortable. The owner is moving too.

Karpeles Museum held a couple of popular events in the neighborhood, drawing a lot of people. They seem comfortable.

China Cat Sun Flower Festival China Cat Sunflower Festival #18 - Jacksonville Nightlife | Examiner.com

And an Experimental Jazz Concert

And a few new residents closed on houses this week, one on E. 2nd and two on Pearl, including a single young woman. Their realtor ( Historic Homes and Real Estate in Jacksonville FL | Pat Nodurft Realtor ) can fill you in, but obviously they feel pretty comfortable, I'd say.

Needless to say, "comfortability" is subjective, but the people who think the Springfield historic district is somehow unreasonabley unsafe are about 10 years behind the curve, literally.

Random things happen everywhere, but serious crime involving your "average" citizen is rare in SPR, just as it is in most decent neighborhoods.

Racism has nothing to do with it. And Jacksonville downtown is NOTHING like "other big cities" because there are so FEW people LIVING there your population is inverse to the normal BIG CITY. Furthermore there is NOTHING OPEN after a certain time. Walking around Philly, for example, all night long is different than walking around Jax downtown-ish all night long because in Philly, normal everyday people are out milling around so if there is an incident someone is always right there. NOT SO in Jax.

I was referring to another poster who spoke about it being dangerous to park on a curb, etc.
Yeah, that was me. As usual, you cherry pick fragments to misrepresent me. I said as a PET SITTER I have a policy of not taking jobs without driveways or on curbs, or without the resident giving me access to their high rise parking spot.

DUH if you HAD a 24/7 business requiring a car, you'd know that if you can't get a spot directly in front of an address, you spend your valuable time walking blocks away and it COSTS YOU MONEY, leaving your car unattended on a street is asking for trouble, and downtown if you don't have meter change you're screwed.

Just like renting a place that has NO PARKING off street is considered a negative, it's the same thing for someone wandering all over the city 24 hours a day servicing people's EMPTY HOUSES when they're away.

I guess people who won't rent a place without off street parking are just racist ignoramuses. Remind us all again how far the PUBLIX is from Springfield??? The one where you suggested the single female OP can just jog or ride a bike to???

Not sure what your first comment is referencing, but the nearest Publix is 3 miles away from the middle of the Springfield historic district. 2.6 miles to 3.4 miles on the edges (closer and furthest).

I didn't suggest it's ideal for people to travel to without a car (I didn't bring it up at all.....see post #8, which you are confused about). That being said, some do.

In fact, the weekly RAM ride (a fun, social bike ride) travels from the Riverside Arts Market, a few blocks away from the Riverside Publix, to various interesting locations in-town, including SPR. Here's some photos of their SPR ride a couple Saturday's ago. It's an easy ride. Kids do it.

The Winn-Dixie is much closer (about 1 mile away) than Publix, and there's also a mom & pop small grocer on W. 7th & Pearl, The Superette. Here's a previous discussion about the Winn-Dixie on City Data. In summary, it's just "ok".
//www.city-data.com/forum/jacks...ringfield.html

And yes, I know plenty of women who go jogging alone around Downtown, Riverside, Springfield, San Marco to & fro alone. Or pushing their baby strollers. It's a daily activity....because joggers live in the neighborhood, of course. Megan S is a French teacher and an avid runner. Michelle G is a PR specialist and runs pushing her stroller. Wendi H recently took up jogging. Etc.

Not alone obviously, but the PRS Running Group runs the neighborhood on a regular basis, and other 5k's are held here regularly.

Here's some photos of those too.

Let me start off by saying that the Springfield area used to be one of the most dangerous sections to live in, in the unincorporated city of Jacksonville, Florida. The key words in the preceding are "used to be" not are. I recently drove through here for the first time in over 45 years and was pleasantly surprised to see that a small section of Springfield has greatly improved, whether this is the historic area (there was no historic area back then) or not I am not positive but it probably is based on what I have read in here. I haven't lived in Jacksonville for the past 45 years until last week, when I moved back to my parents home in Arlington. Which I inherited last year when my mother passed on, and joined my father who passed on 20 years ago.

Back in 1967/68 there were race riots going on in downtown Jacksonville, some north of State Street in the Springfield area some off of Florida Blvd north of the old Wolfson Baseball Stadium. Also 8th and Main and 10th and Main Streets used to be the well known "red-light district" of Jacksonville where at least 20-30 prostitutes used to walk the streets looking for clients to service. Many times we rousted drug addicts and hookers out of the bushes and off of the property of my parents old house in Springfield, on W. 7th Street. (Yes! I grew up in Springfield)

The original posters question was, is Springfield safe? I would have to say the "historic" area is safer now than it was 15-45 years ago, the rest of it probably not so much.

Yes, all the historic neighborhoods surrounding Downtown (San Marco, Springfield, Riverside) are more popular now than they have been in many decades, and thus safer. It follows the national trend, that people with means/money are either moving further out to the latest shiny suburb or back closer to the city. The spaces in between destined to become the least desirable space.

That being said, violent crime in Jacksonville is at a 41 year low. So things everywhere else (on average) in Jax has improved greatly as well. The peak was the 90's, if I'm not mistaken. Of course the exceptions are well known, ie the general NorthWest segment of town, parts of Arlington, etc.

You can read some stories of how things used to be years ago (amazing to read how it was!) in the neighborhood via the Long-Time Resident interviews linked below. They're a great illustration of a transformation. I wish Riverside's transition in the 80's & 90's (which I grew up in) was documented as well, but the internet age wasn't quite as ripe then. : )

Of these below, I think Michaell Trautmann's interview really paints the best picture.

"...but police do not believe foul play is involved."

Who knows what happened. Strange things can happen to homeless people and/or people involved in sketchy activities. That area is at the edge of an industrial zone, so I doubt anyone would see or hear anything.

On another note, in the article lists off all the other confirmed foul play incidents (not in this area) in Jax over the past week. There seem to be a number in the general Baymeadows/Emerson area of the south side lately.
