I think the Mafia comment was foolish.

And if you're interviewing for a corporate position at Wal-Mart and showed up in a black shirt, you'd like like an idiot.

I wouldn't do it, it's not about what you think, but the perception the interviewer has of you. Pretty simple, either a navy or charcoal gray suit, black shoes with the gray suit, burgundy or brown shoes with the navy suit, white shirt looks the sharpest, and a comsevative tie...

Black shirt may be viewed differently, even though you may be 100% qualified for the position the interviewer may think differently because of your dress. First impression means so much, save the black shirt for something else.

OP, I'm not sure why you bother to start a thread with a question when all you do is belittle those who are advising you of protocol where color of shirt is concerned. Both the majority and your friend is correct that a black shirt is not suitable attire for a job interview. The fact that you don't agree is irrelevant but it is what it is so if you want to stand a better chance of landing the position then wear a white or pastel shirt and save the black for nights out.

As another poster said, worn shoes are acceptable - as long as they're clean, polished and the soles aren't flapping off them as you walk. Good luck.

If you were applying for a job in a creative field, a black shirt with a black tie and suit would not be deemed inappropriate. I know men who have worn such attire for jobs in the film industry, advertising, architecture, and graphic design. It's all about who your audience is.

As for the analogy that worn out shoes mean a worker will wear out the company? That's just bizarre. I agree with the posters above that the applicant should wear well-kept and preferably polished shoes but the reason is simply to present a good impression as with everything else you are wearing at an interview, not because there's an analogy between shoes and business acumen.

There's a reason jobs are described as white collar and blue collar. If you're interviewing for a white collar job, wear a white shirt.

Well if it is Wal-Mart he's applying to, he can just stop off in the store first to get a white shirt :-)
