all my older relatives tell me to "put on a suit and go in person" to cold call employers as a way to solve my unemployment but i wonder if they're living in the past.
in nyc it's especially difficult because of building security post-9/11.
anyone have experience with this in the last couple of years?
I don't have experience with this BUT I've also been wondering if this is done anymore. Sometimes I'll catch a movie from the 80's or another era gone by where a character is circling the want ads and going from place to place looking for employment. It makes me sad that this doesn't seem to be accepted anymore. I, too, look forward to responses to your question!!
Well, as you can imagine it's a pain for the company to have people coming in. As mentioned, it's a security risk, but it also wastes the managers/receptionists time.
I've found my internships/jobs through the university website and campus recruiting.
I wouldn't recommend just walking in somewhere in today's world.
I don't think its a good strategy anymore. Many places have security and you can't even get in the front door without a badge. Most people will just point you to their website.
Everything's online now. Even for retail, you walk in and they point to a computer.
That's true! I use to just walk in different businesses but not anymore. I did a walk in to present an updated resume but still got that "don't waste my time" look
Yup, gone. After I finished my phlebotomy training I went to every lab, Red Cross and hospital in my area to "drop off a resume" and NOT ONE of them would even take it and all said go to their website.
Now when I hear the "get dressed up and go in person line" I KNOW they haven't looked for work in at least a decade.

You're so right...I was unemployed for about 8 mos. last year and my folks were trying to compare their experiences to mine. I know they think they were being helpful but when I told them that things don't work the way they did in the 70's, I got a tyrade on how bad the economy was. Uh, it was so bad that you started a business in 74 and when you sold the company in 95, you made so much that you've been retired since. NOT THE SAME. Anyway, the impersonal internet approach seems to be the only way. It's not who you know OR what you know anymore...I honestly don't know what the trick is...although I lucked out and got the job I have now. Not a dream but it is a paycheck!
